Despite it's name you don't need to be an idiot to lose weight with Fat Loss 4 Idiots.

In fact, the approach used in this program is actually a bit more complicated than in the others we reviewed.

Fat Loss 4 Idiots (FL4I) advocates something they call "calorie shifting" which means that you will have days with high calories and days with lower calories.

The idea is that by eating more calories on some days and less on the others you keep your metabolism elevated while avoiding the consistent hunger and cravings of other diet plans.

The increased metabolism is nice for it's fat burning effects, but the real benefit is that the high calorie days make it easier to stay on the plan. Weight loss doesn't happen overnight with any program, so having something you can follow for the long-haul is key.

While the long-term results are nice, we all want quick weight loss as well. To meet this goal FL4I uses an 11-day cycle. You plan out your diet for 11 days and then measure your results at that point. It is definitely doable to lose anywhere from 3-6 pounds on each 11-day cycle.

Having short-term success like this keeps you motivated to continue and each 11-day cycle will put you that much closer to your long-term weight loss goal.

The only downside to this program is that it takes some time to count your calories. But if you are serious about losing weight this is a small price to pay.

Another great thing about FL4I is that it doesn't require a lot of intense exercise like some of the other programs we reviewed. It is suggested that you do some moderate cardio exercise a few days a week, but even that is not a requirement for this program. This is huge benefit for those of us who don't have time to workout, or just don't like to.

Conclusion:Very motivating and effective program. Does not require any exercise. Our top recommendation.

2. Fat Burning Furnace

Fat Burning Furnace works for men or women at any age, but it is targeted more towards the novice exerciser.

The diet information is basic, but solid. If you follow the diet along with the exercise recommendations you should see some good results.

The only downside is that the exercise it requires is pretty intense. On the website you will see that they advertise the program as the "15 minute miracle." This refers to their short (15 minutes or less), but intense exercise sessions.

For those with limited time these short sessions are great way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine, but most beginners will find these sessions very difficult to get through, even if they are only 15 minutes.

While the results are similar to our top pick, the intense exercise makes the program more difficult to stick to.

Conclusion:Good results, but the exercise portion is very intense. If you don't mind challenging workouts then this may be the program for you.

3. Every Other Day Diet

The Every Other Day Diet is a program created by trainer Jon Benson which claims to allow you to eat junk foods like pizza, ice cream, and chocolate while still losing weight.

This is done by showing you when and how to eat bad foods so they don't hurt your progress. In fact, eating bad foods can actually help to elevate your metabolism and help you stick to the diet.

Unfortunately, eating bad foods also tends to be a trap for many people who struggle to lose weight. If you are an emotional eater then it can be very difficult to control yourself and only eat small portions of bad foods (chocolate anyone?) as this plan requires.

If you are looking for a slightly more laid-back diet and you don't have trouble controlling yourself around bad foods then this may be ticket for you.

Conclusion:Easy to follow plan, but the results are slower than with our top 2 picks. Not a good plan for emotional eaters.
